American Legion Post 153 of New Auburn, Maine received it's charter on the 18th of November 1945. The members met at Hector Breau's barbershop in New Auburn. Hector was elected as the first Commander and John Boyl was the first Adjutant.  The first installation of officers was held at the Wilson School. The next location of meetings was at Pontbriand's Hardware Store. During the next three years the membership increased to seventy-five.  To facilitate this number, the Legionaires moved to the New Auburn Social Club.  During this time Bill Rogers was elected as the second Commander.  Through some negotiations the City of Auburn transferred an abandoned fire station on the corner of South Main and Cook Street for the price of one dollar and valuable consideration, to the American Legion Post 153. The building originally had a stable in the back with horses to pull the fire wagon. A great deal of maintainance was required to bring the building up to Post standards.  The second floor had an office with a horseshoe bar and the first floor was used for social events. It was later decided that the stairs were difficult for some veterans to negotiate, so a new bar was constructed  on the first level.  The original horseshoe bar was given to the Sabattus Post.  Through the years many improvements have been made.  Members from Post 153 have been StateCommanders and Bill Rogers was the first from the State of Maine to become National Commander. At present the Post has approximately five-hundred members .
